Controlling blood cholesterol and uric acid levels can lower your risk for heart and joints disease. It is critical for ALL adults including healthy young adults. The importance of screening, evaluation and treatment of high blood cholesterol and uric acid in adults cannot be emphasized enough.
Research has clearly shown that lowering cholesterol can reduce the risk of developing heart disease. And maintaining balanced healthy diet can prevent joint pain and osteoarthritis. For example:
1. Oatmeal and High-fiber foods
Oatmeal contains soluble fiber, which reduces the LDL, the “bad” cholesterol. Soluble fiber is also found in such foods as kidney beans, apples, pears, barley and prunes.
2. Fish and Omega-3 fatty acids
Eating fatty fish can be heart-healthy because of its high levels of omega-3 fatty acids. At least two servings of fish a week will be enough as maintaining healthy dose and preventive of bad cholesterol. The highest levels of omega-3 fatty acids are in: Mackerel, Lake trout, Tuna, and Salmon. Baking or grilling the fish is better to avoid adding unhealthy fats.
3. Walnuts, Almonds and other Raw Nuts
Eating about a handful of most nuts, such as walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, pecans, some pine nuts, pistachio nuts and walnuts is lowering your LDL and Uric acid.
4. Olive oil
Olive oil contains a potent mix of antioxidants that can lower “bad” (LDL) cholesterol. About 2 tablespoons of olive oil a day in place of other fats is to be mix with vinegar as a salad dressing.
At the same time, cutting of Saturated fats, like those in meat, full-fat dairy products and some oils, and Trans fats found in margarines and store-bought cookies, crackers and cakes, will greatly benefiting.
5. Purine-Rich Foods (results Uric Acid) that should be avoided include:
- Beer, PEPSI, Coca, sardines in oil, fish roes.
- Organ meat (liver, kidneys) and meat extracts.
- Legumes (dried beans, peas) and yeast or its content.
- Mushrooms, spinach, asparagus, cauliflower.
Beneficial Foods: Dark berries, Tofu which is made from soybeans may be a better choice than meats. Fatty acids found in certain fish such as salmon, flax or olive oil, or nuts may possess some anti-inflammatory benefits.
Maintain a healthy/balanced diet, drink plenty of fluids/water, exercise and maintain a healthy body weight is a helpful aspect to lower the uric acid and avoid its pain. Diets designed for quick or extreme weight loss will work against you though!!! That’s why you need to be patient if you are looking for perfect shape.
